I had the pleasure of delivering the the Gender Equality Strategy 2024–2029 that was launched on 30 May 2024 in Strasbourg, at the “United around gender equality: making space for women and girls” conference organised under the Lithuanian presidency of the Committee of Ministers.
I wrote up my experience for the IW Newsletter (#238 sex disaggregated airport queues). Here’s how the Council of Europe described it.
“This high-level event, opened by Justina Jakštienė, Vice-Minister of Social Security and Labour of the Republic of Lithuania and Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, highlighted the Council of Europe member States’ strong political commitment to address the numerous and multifaceted challenges to gender equality, as expressed in the Reykjavik Declaration, and focused on a youth perspective to advance gender equality.
Internationally renowned feminist campaigner, Caroline Criado Perez, author of INVISIBLE WOMEN: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men, delivered the keynote speech. The morning session launched the new Gender Equality Strategy 2024-2029 whereas the afternoon marked the 10th anniversary of the entry into force of the Istanbul Convention and its impact in practice.”
The strategy focuses on six strategic areas:
- Preventing and combating gender stereotypes and sexism
- Preventing and combating violence against women and girls and domestic violence
- Ensuring equal access to justice for women and girls
- Achieving balanced participation of women and men in political, public, social and economic life
- Ensuring women’s empowerment and gender equality in relation to global and geopolitical challenges
- Achieving gender mainstreaming and including an intersectional approach in all policies and measures
It was encouraging to meet with these leaders and see them tackling the policy implications of addressing the gender data gap. You can read the entire strategy here.
